Description

Creating a school environment where students feel safe physically, socially, and emotionally is essential for academic success and personal development. In this breakout session, explore how one school district integrated a vapor wake dog into its safety strategy, not just as a tool for detection, but as a proactive presence that contributes to a culture of trust and well-being.

Unlike traditional detection canines, vapor wake dogs are trained to detect and follow the scent trail of hazardous materials carried through moving air, offering continuous, real-time threat detection in dynamic school environments. But their impact goes far beyond security. When implemented thoughtfully, these highly trained animals help deter harmful behaviors, support emergency preparedness, and, perhaps most importantly, become a visible symbol of care and commitment to student safety.

We’ll share lessons learned from deploying a vapor wake dog in a K–12 setting, including stakeholder communication, student engagement, policy development, and how the dog’s presence positively influenced school climate. Participants will leave with practical insights into funding, implementation, and how this innovative approach supports whole-child development in a safe, supportive school community.
