DESCRIPTION:

In this presentation, Alana and Ella will discuss current “hot topics” in school law, including navigating the First Amendment rights of public school students and employees, top tips related to student discipline, and a Title IX update.

PRESENTER: Attorney Alana Leffler - Renning Lewis & Lacy

A member of the school law practice group at Renning, Lewis & Lacy, Alana’s practice focuses primarily on representing public K-12 schools in the areas of general school law, special education law, and labor and employment law.

She counsels clients on topics such as: student discipline; student bullying and harassment; Title IX; open meetings; public records; school board policies; special education mediation and due process; employee misconduct investigations; sexual harassment; employee discipline and dismissal; and issues arising under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Alana regularly presents on topics related to general school law, special education law, and labor and employment law. She has collaborated with schools to train school staff regarding legal requirements and best practices. In addition, she has co-taught graduate-level school law courses/seminars at Alverno College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and she has guest-lectured at the Marquette University Law School’s Education Law course. PRESENTER: Attorney Ella Wolle - Renning Lewis & Lacy

Ella is a member of the school law practice group at Renning, Lewis & Lacy. She advises public and private schools on topics such as compliance with the Public Records Law and Open Meetings Law, development of school policies, procedures, and employee and parent/student handbooks, student discipline, expulsion appeals, and Title IX. During her time in law school, Ella also participated in the Restorative Justice Project clinical program and was a member of the Pro Bono Society.
